What is the Cheetah?
The cheetah is the world's fastest land animal, capable of reaching speeds up to 120 km/h in short bursts, and is the only member of the genus Acinonyx. It is a slender, long-legged felid found primarily across sub-Saharan Africa in open grasslands and savannas, with a relic population in Iran. Unlike most large cats, it is diurnal and relies almost entirely on speed and sight to hunt. The cheetah is remarkable for its unique semi-retractable claws, dog-like body plan, and extraordinary acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 3 seconds.
Where does the Cheetah live?

Typically found at low to moderate altitudes, from sea level up to approximately 4,000 m in the Ethiopian highlands. Most populations inhabit plains and plateaus between 0 and 1,800 m.
Seasonal movements
Cheetahs do not hibernate or undertake long-distance seasonal migrations. However, home range movements may shift seasonally following prey migrations (e.g., wildebeest and gazelle movements in East Africa). Breeding can occur year-round, though there may be slight peaks correlated with prey availability.
Habitat of the Cheetah
Cheetahs favor open or semi-open habitats where speed can be used effectively: grasslands, open woodland savannas, scrublands, and semi-arid plains. They also occur in thornbush and acacia savanna ecosystems. Dense rainforests and high mountain areas are generally avoided. In parts of their range they adapt to desert margins such as the Sahel and Kalahari.

What the Cheetah looks like
The cheetah has a tawny to pale buff coat covered with approximately 2,000 solid black spots (roughly 1–3 cm diameter), distinguishable from the rosettes of leopards and jaguars. The underparts are white and unspotted. The face bears distinctive solid black 'tear stripes' running from the inner corner of each eye to the mouth. The head is relatively small with high-set eyes, the body is slender and deep-chested, and the limbs are long and slender.

Distinctive features
