What is the Aoudad?

The Aoudad, or Barbary sheep, is a large wild caprid native to the rocky, arid mountains of North Africa and the sole species in the monotypic genus Ammotragus. Morphologically and genetically intermediate between true sheep (Ovis) and goats (Capra), it occupies a unique phylogenetic position within the subfamily Caprinae. Typically found between 300 m and 3,500 m above sea level in the native range, though lower-elevation foothills are also used. Preference is strongly dictated by terrain ruggedness rather than a specific altitude band.

What the Aoudad looks like

The Aoudad has a coarse, sandy to reddish-brown coat providing excellent camouflage in rocky desert terrain, with a paler, cream-colored belly. Both sexes bear sweeping, heavily ridged, backward-curving horns. The most distinctive feature is the soft, flowing curtain of reddish-brown hair ('mane' or 'chaps') hanging from the throat, chest, and inner forelegs, especially prominent in males.
