What is the Impala?
The impala is a medium-sized, elegant antelope endemic to sub-Saharan Africa, widely regarded as one of the most successful and abundant antelopes on the continent. It inhabits open savanna woodlands and bushveld, typically near permanent water sources. Remarkable for its extraordinary agility, the impala can leap up to 3 meters vertically and cover over 10 meters horizontally in a single bound, an adaptation for evading predators. The common impala ranges from central Kenya and Uganda south through Tanzania, Rwanda, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and northeastern South Africa (KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo). The black-faced impala is confined to Kaokoland in northwestern Namibia and Cunene Province in southwestern Angola. Absent from West Africa and the Congo Basin.
Altitude and depth
Typically found at altitudes between 0 and 2,000 m above sea level. Most abundant in lowland and mid-elevation savannas; less common above 1,800 m.
Seasonal movements
Impala do not undertake long-distance migrations but show seasonal shifts in home range use based on water and food availability. The rut occurs during the dry season (April–June in southern Africa; November in East Africa), coinciding with the onset of rains. Births are highly synchronized, occurring within a 2–3 week window to overwhelm predators.
Habitat of the Impala
The impala favors open savanna woodlands, bushveld, and grassland-woodland ecotones with access to water. It avoids dense forest, open plains without cover, and very arid environments. Acacia and miombo woodlands are preferred habitats. It is strongly dependent on permanent water sources, rarely moving more than 15 km from water.

What the Impala looks like
The impala has a sleek, reddish-brown coat on the upper body, fading to a paler tan on the flanks and white on the belly, chin, and inner thighs. A distinctive pattern of black stripes runs down the center of the tail and along each buttock, forming a characteristic 'M' or trident-like marking on the rump. The face is finely featured with large, dark eyes and a black-tipped muzzle.

Primarily diurnal and crepuscular, with peak feeding activity in the early morning and late afternoon. Activity decreases during the hottest midday hours. Impalas rest and ruminate during the midday heat, often in shaded woodland areas. They may be active at night near water sources.

During the wet season, they predominantly graze on short, nutritious grasses; during the dry season, they shift to browsing on leaves, shoots, fruits, and forbs.
