What is the Blackbuck?

The blackbuck is a medium-sized antelope native to the Indian subcontinent and the only living species in the genus Antilope. It inhabits open grasslands and scrublands and is renowned for being one of the fastest land animals, capable of sustained speeds up to 80 km/h. Males are strikingly bicolored with dark brown to black upperparts and white underparts, and bear long spirally twisted ringed horns. What the Blackbuck looks like

Adult males are strikingly bicolored: dark brown to black on the back, sides, and outer limbs, with sharply contrasting white underparts, inner legs, and a white ring around each eye. Females and young males are pale fawn to tan dorsally, with the same white underparts. Males bear long, ringed, spirally twisted (3–4 turns) V-shaped horns. Distinctive features

The blackbuck is unique among Indian antelopes for its pronounced black-and-white sexual dichromatism in males. The long, tightly spiraled ringed horns are diagnostic and unlike those of any other South Asian antelope. The sharp demarcation between the black dorsal and white ventral coloration is visible from great distances on open grassland.

Differences between males and females

Highly pronounced. Males are significantly larger and heavier, bear conspicuous spiraling horns, and develop a striking black-and-white coat at sexual maturity. Females are hornless (rarely bear small, poorly developed horns) and retain a uniform fawn coloration throughout their life. Males also develop darker pigmentation progressively with age.
