What is the Afro-Australian Fur Seal?
Arctocephalus pusillus is the largest of all fur seal species in the genus Arctocephalus and one of the most numerous pinnipeds in the Southern Hemisphere. It inhabits cold, productive coastal waters associated with major upwelling systems — the Benguela Current in southern Africa and the East Australian Current region. The species is remarkable for extreme sexual dimorphism, with males several times larger than females, and for forming enormous, densely packed breeding colonies on rocky shores and offshore islands. It plays a critical ecological role as a mid-trophic predator in its respective marine ecosystems.
Where does the Afro-Australian Fur Seal live?

In Africa: along the entire Namibian coastline and around the Cape Peninsula and eastern coastline of South Africa, extending to roughly East London. Major colonies include Cape Cross (Namibia), Seal Island (False Bay), and Dyer Island. In Australia: southeastern coast including the Furneaux Group, Kent Group, Seal Rocks (Victoria), Kanowna Island, and Judgment Rocks in Bass Strait and Tasmania.
Altitude and depth
Essentially restricted to sea level at land. At sea, foraging dives typically range from 30 to 100 m in depth, but individuals can reach depths exceeding 200 m. The maximum recorded depth is approximately 378 m for brief dives.
Seasonal movements
Breeding occurs seasonally from late October to January, with peak pupping in late November–December. Males arrive at breeding sites before females to establish territories. Post-breeding, adults disperse more widely along the coast to forage. There is no true long-distance migration, but some seasonal shifts in foraging range occur, particularly in winter.
Habitat of the Afro-Australian Fur Seal
Rocky coastlines, offshore islands, and sandy beaches are used for hauling out, breeding, and molting. At sea, the species inhabits coastal and shelf waters strongly influenced by cold upwelling currents, diving to forage in open pelagic and demersal zones. Colonies are typically located on wind-swept, wave-battered rocky outcrops that offer protection from terrestrial predators.
Adaptations to its environment
The species has a thick underfur overlaid by coarser guard hairs, providing excellent thermal insulation in cold waters, as well as a layer of subcutaneous blubber. Elongated foreflippers allow efficient surface swimming and maneuvering on land. Highly flexible metabolic and diving physiology enables efficient oxygen storage and extended dives. Counter-current heat exchange in the flippers prevents heat loss in cold water.
Conservation status and numbers
Listed as Least Concern (LC) by the IUCN (assessed 2015). The South African subspecies has recovered significantly from 19th-century commercial sealing and now numbers in the millions. The Australian subspecies remains smaller in number but is also considered stable. Despite LC status, some regional populations may face pressure from fisheries interactions and climate-driven prey shifts.

The South African subspecies (A. p. pusillus) is estimated at approximately 1.5–2 million individuals, making it one of the most abundant fur seal populations globally. The Australian subspecies (A. p. doriferus) numbers approximately 100,000–120,000 individuals. Overall global population trend is considered stable to slowly increasing for the African subspecies, and broadly stable for the Australian one.
What threatens the Afro-Australian Fur Seal?
Competition and bycatch associated with commercial fisheries (particularly hake, anchovy, and pilchard trawlers and longliners) are the most significant ongoing threats. Legal commercial culling continues in Namibia, where tens of thousands of pups and bulls are harvested annually for fur and body parts. Oil spills (notably the MV Treasure spill of 2000 near Dassen Island) pose acute risks. Climate change is altering upwelling intensity and prey availability. Entanglement in discarded fishing gear is also documented.
Diseases and parasites
Infested by external parasites including lice (Antarctophthirus species) and various acanthocephalan, nematode, and cestode internal parasites. Hookworm (Uncinaria species) infestations in pups can cause significant mortality. Phocine distemper virus and calicivirus have been detected. Entanglement in marine debris and plastics causes injury and mortality.

Both subspecies are listed on CITES Appendix II, regulating international trade. In South Africa, the species is protected under the Marine Living Resources Act (1998) and within several Marine Protected Areas including the Table Mountain National Park Marine Protected Area. The SANCCOB (Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds) conducts rescue and rehabilitation efforts. In Australia, the species is protected under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. WWF and various NGOs monitor and advocate against the Namibian seal cull.
Recommended actions
Strengthening monitoring of bycatch and fisheries interactions across both subspecies' ranges is a priority. Ending or significantly reducing the Namibian commercial seal cull would benefit conservation optics and sustainability. Expanding and enforcing Marine Protected Areas over key foraging grounds is recommended. Long-term monitoring of climate change impacts on prey species and oceanographic conditions is critical. Continued oil-spill response preparedness and rehabilitation infrastructure should be maintained.
What the Afro-Australian Fur Seal looks like
Males are robust and muscular with a thick, dark brown to nearly black coat, and develop a pronounced mane of longer, coarser hair around the neck and shoulders with age. Females and juveniles are lighter silver-gray to tawny brown on the dorsal side and creamy buff on the ventral side. The face is dog-like with visible ear pinnae, distinguishing otariids from true seals. The foreflippers are long and powerful.
Size
Males: 2.0–2.3 m in body length; females: 1.2–1.7 m. Australian males can reach 2.5 m. The species is the largest fur seal in the world.
Weight
Males: typically 200–360 kg, with the largest Australian individuals occasionally exceeding 360 kg. Females are much smaller at 36–75 kg. Pups weigh approximately 4.5–7 kg at birth.
Distinctive features
As the largest fur seal in the genus Arctocephalus, A. pusillus is notably bulkier than related species such as A. tropicalis (Subantarctic Fur Seal) or A. gazella (Antarctic Fur Seal). Males lack the striking orange-chested coloration of A. tropicalis. The pronounced neck mane of adult males and the robust, broad muzzle are key identifying features compared to other southern hemisphere fur seals.
Differences between males and females
Extreme sexual dimorphism is a hallmark of this species. Adult males are 4–6 times heavier than females and 1.5–2 times longer. Males develop a thick mane and are much darker in color. This dimorphism is among the most pronounced of any pinniped and is driven by intense male–male competition for breeding territories and females.
Behaviour and diet of the Afro-Australian Fur Seal
Highly gregarious, forming enormous breeding colonies that can contain hundreds of thousands of individuals. Breeding is polygynous: dominant bulls (beachmasters) defend territories containing harems of 5–25 females. Outside the breeding season, males form all-male bachelor groups. Active both day and night at sea. Foraging trips alternate with rest periods on shore. Females making longer foraging trips of 2–10 days alternate with nursing bouts on shore. Diet
Carnivorous; diet varies by location and season. The South African subspecies feeds primarily on small pelagic fish such as anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus), Cape horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus capensis), and pilchard (Sardinops sagax), supplemented by squid and octopus. The Australian subspecies targets redbait, barracouta, jack mackerel, and cephalopods. Opportunistic feeding on crustaceans and occasionally seabirds is also recorded.
How it feeds and hunts
Forages primarily at depth during the day, pursuing fish and cephalopods using vision in the photic zone. Highly agile underwater, capable of rapid direction changes to pursue prey. Vibrissae (whiskers) may assist in detecting hydrodynamic trails of prey in low-light conditions. Foraging trips may extend up to 200 km from the colony.
Communication
Vocalizations are diverse and play a key role in mother–pup recognition amid dense, noisy colonies. Adult males produce loud, deep bellowing roars to assert dominance and warn rivals. Females produce higher-pitched bleating calls. Scent marking is used by males to demarcate territorial boundaries. Visual and tactile displays (neck biting, body posturing) are common during male–male competition.
Interactions with other species
The great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) is the primary marine predator, famously launching spectacular predatory breaching attacks at Seal Island in False Bay, South Africa. Killer whales (Orcinus orca) also prey on this species. On land, black-backed jackals and brown hyenas prey on pups at African colonies. Reproduction and lifecycle
Breeding season peaks November–December in Africa (slightly later in Australia). Females give birth to a single pup 6–7 days after arrival at the colony. Fertilization occurs approximately 6 days post-partum, but a delayed implantation of 3–4 months extends total gestation to approximately 12 months. Each female produces one pup per year.
Raising the young
Mothers nurse pups for 8–11 months, alternating short nursing bouts on shore with longer offshore foraging trips (lasting 2–10 days). Pups are recognized by distinctive vocalizations and scent. Fathers provide no parental care. Pups begin to enter the water and learn to swim at approximately 4–6 weeks of age, but nutritional dependence on the mother continues until weaning.

In South Africa, commercial harvest was banned. The species is a major draw for ecotourism — particularly shark-cage diving and colony viewing — generating substantial revenue along the Western Cape and Namibian coasts.
