What is the Arctic Fox?

The Arctic Fox is a small, highly cold-adapted canid inhabiting the circumpolar tundra and sea-ice zones of the Northern Hemisphere. It is remarkable for possessing the densest, most thermally insulating fur of any mammal, enabling survival at temperatures as low as −50°C without shivering. Does not hibernate; active year-round. Undergoes dramatic seasonal coat molt (brown/gray to white) in autumn and the reverse in spring. Some populations undertake extensive migrations — individuals tracked moving over 4,500 km across sea ice, following polar bears or prey abundance. Pre-winter hyperphagia occurs in late summer/autumn to build fat reserves.

Habitat of the Arctic Fox

Arctic and sub-Arctic tundra is the core habitat, including open treeless plains, coastal cliffs, river deltas, and sea-ice margins. Coastal populations heavily exploit marine environments (beaches, intertidal zones, bird cliffs). Some individuals range widely across pack ice far from land, especially in winter when following polar bears.

Protected from hunting in Norway since 1930, Sweden since 1928, Finland since 1940. What the Arctic Fox looks like

Two main color morphs exist year-round. The 'white morph' (dominant in continental/inland populations) transitions from a brown-gray dorsal coat with cream belly in summer to a pure white winter coat. The 'blue morph' (dominant in coastal and island populations) remains slate-blue to dark charcoal year-round, turning slightly lighter in winter. All individuals have a thick, fluffy tail, a compact rounded head, small rounded ears, and heavily furred paws.

Size

Head-body length: 46–68 cm; tail length: 28–55 cm; shoulder height: approximately 25–30 cm. Males are slightly larger than females on average.

Weight

Adults typically weigh 1.4–9.4 kg, with significant seasonal variation due to fat storage; average adult male ~3.5–4.5 kg, average adult female ~2.9–3.5 kg. Pre-winter individuals can double their summer body mass in fat.

Distinctive features

Distinguished from the closely related red fox (Vulpes vulpes) by its much smaller and more compact form, distinctly shorter and more rounded ears, heavily furred soles of the feet, and the unique seasonal white coat. The blue morph's year-round dark coloration is unlike any other wild canid in the Arctic. The much wider and flatter skull compared to red fox is also diagnostic.

Differences between males and females

Sexual dimorphism is moderate: males (dogs) are on average 10–20% heavier than females (vixens) and slightly longer, but color, coat pattern, and general morphology are identical between sexes. No significant differences in ear shape, tail length, or other external features.

Behaviour and diet of the Arctic Fox

Primarily monogamous; bonded pairs cooperate during breeding season and pup-rearing. Helpers (typically offspring from previous litters) occasionally assist parents at the den. Outside the breeding season, individuals are largely solitary but may aggregate opportunistically near large food resources such as whale carcasses or at seal pupping areas. No rigid dominance hierarchy documented in wild populations.

Predominantly crepuscular and diurnal, though highly opportunistic — active at any hour depending on prey availability, light conditions (continuous polar day or night), and disturbance. Generally poses no direct physical threat to humans; bites are very rare and typically only occur if the animal is cornered, injured, or disease-affected. The primary risk is rabies transmission — Arctic Fox is the main reservoir of Arctic rabies, and any unusually bold, disoriented, or aggressive individual should be considered potentially infected. Human uses

Historically one of the most commercially important fur-bearing mammals in the world, driving extensive trapping industries across the Arctic from the 17th to 20th centuries and forming a cornerstone of the Hudson's Bay Company trade. Still farmed for fur in Finland and Norway (blue morph particularly prized). Hunted by Inuit, Yupik, and Sámi peoples for both fur (clothing) and occasionally food. No significant use in traditional medicine.
