What is the Dibatag?
The dibatag, or Clarke's gazelle, is a slender, long-necked antelope endemic to the semi-arid plains of the Horn of Africa. It is the sole representative of its genus Ammodorcas, making it evolutionarily distinct from all other bovids. It is remarkable for its giraffe-like neck, extremely long legs, and the habit of carrying its tail erect like a flagpole when alarmed or running. Despite superficial similarities to the gerenuk, it is not its closest relative and represents a separate evolutionary lineage.

It is well adapted to arid conditions and can subsist with very little free water, obtaining most moisture from the succulent leaves it browses.

What the Dibatag looks like
The upperparts are pale grayish-brown with a faint reddish tinge on the flanks, transitioning to white on the underparts and inner legs. The face has a dark stripe running from the corner of each eye to the muzzle, and a white supraorbital stripe above it. The tail is long, dark-tipped, and characteristically held erect when running. The neck is notably elongated.

Head-body length: 150–170 cm; shoulder height: 80–88 cm; tail length: 30–36 cm. One of the taller gazelle-like antelopes relative to its body mass.
Weight
Adults typically weigh 22–35 kg. Sexual dimorphism in size is moderate; males tend to be slightly larger than females.
Distinctive features
Distinguished from the gerenuk (Litocranius walleri) by its shorter, recurved horns (in males), darker facial markings, gray-brown rather than reddish coat, and the characteristic habit of erecting and wagging the tail. Its horns curve forward and then back in a lyre-like shape, distinctly different from the gerenuk's more upright, ringed horns.
Differences between males and females
Only males bear horns, which are lyre-shaped and recurved, measuring 25–33 cm in length. Females are hornless. Males are slightly heavier and taller on average. Both sexes share the same coat color pattern.
Behaviour and diet of the Dibatag
Typically solitary or found in small groups of 2–5 individuals (usually a female with offspring, or occasionally a small herd). Males are territorial and will defend core areas against rivals. Groups larger than 7–8 are rarely observed.
When it is active
Primarily diurnal, with peak activity during the cooler morning and late afternoon hours. During the hottest part of the day, the dibatag rests in the shade of shrubs. Mildly crepuscular behavior has been noted.
Diet
Strictly a browser; feeds on leaves, buds, shoots, and flowers of Acacia, Commiphora, and other dry-scrub shrubs. Also occasionally consumes forbs and succulent plants. It does not graze on grasses and requires browse-rich habitat.
